Preparation for Upper Endoscopy/EGD

These instructions are designed to maximize your safety during and after the examination and to minimize possible complications. EGD is a safe procedure and associated with low risks. It is important that you read the instructions ahead of time and follow them carefully.

Notify your doctor if:

  • You are taking Aspirin like products, ibuprofen, Plavix, Coumadin. You may need to stop that 1 week before the procedure.
  • You have a history of heart murmur, vascular graft implantation, or prosthetic joints, as prophylactic antibiotics may be necessary.

Make sure you follow the specific prep your physician indicated.

Please print Endoscopy Check List since it will help you to get ready for the procedure. Do not hesitate to call your doctor or the endoscopy unit if you still have questions.

For the best possible examination, the stomach must be completely empty so you should have nothing to eat or drink (including water from 11 p.m. on the evening before the examination or for at least six hours before its performance. Your doctor will be more specific about the time to begin fasting, depending on the time of day that your EGD is scheduled.
